Overhauling one of the worlds biggest online talent competitions for the ABC
Unearthed is one of the world’s biggest music talent competitions. Started in 1995 by Australian radio station triple j as an avenue to discover new and undiscovered musical talent, Unearthed has kickstarted the careers of million-selling artists like Missy Higgins and Grinspoon.
More than twenty years later, the site now forms the backbone of the competition: bands are able to upload their music and promote their gigs through the site, the website streams over 99,000 tracks and counting, as well as featuring an always-on digital radio station that curates the playlists.
Bringing about best practice
This Little Duck performed a site audit and brought about several changes to bring the site into best practice: we helped migrate more thatn 600,000 content items from a legacy system into the new Drupal CMS—a platform that could cohere the varied data streams, cope with Unearthed’s hundreds of thousands of visits every month, and flex with future growth.
Flexibility for the future
The triple j Unearthed website involves a lot of content moderation and management and thus the combination of workflow and views bulk operation allowed for an effective blend of flexibility and finesse.
Implementing painless mobile apps
The site was also accompanied by companion iOS and Android apps that let users play, download and share tracks from the site. The Drupal application leverages the extensibility of Drupal to provide an API for the Unearthed companion iOS and Android apps that let users play, download and share tracks from the site.
